FAQs on NP® SiOPack® - Frequently asked questions

NP® SiOPack® is a Water-based, inorganic SiO₂ thin-film technology, which gives paper, cardboard and moulded fibre parts a Highly effective barrier against moisture, oils/greases and microorganisms lends.
The coating comes without polymer-based plastics and enables complete Recyclable and compostable paper packaging.

In short:
NP® SiOPack® replaces plastic coatings with an ultra-thin, mineral protective layer of silicon dioxide (SiO₂).

The coating is applied using a Sol-gel process applied directly to the paper surface.
After drying, the result is a Transparent SiO₂ layer just a few nanometres thick, which:

  • hydrophobic properties (protection against moisture)

  • oleophobic properties (protection against grease & oil)

  • Mechanical flexibility

united - without changing the feel, printability or appearance of the paper.

Yes. NP® SiOPack® is a Sustainable, plastic-free barrier coating and offers the following environmental benefits:

  • compostable

  • Recyclable in the paper stream

  • PFAS-free

  • Free from microplastics

  • Water-based, without solvents or fluoropolymers

NP thus fulfils® SiOPack® Central requirements for Environmentally friendly packaging solution

NP® SiOPack® is versatile and is suitable for, among other things

  • Food packaging
(e.g. bread roll bags, window bags, take-away trays)

  • Pharma & healthcare
(e.g. packaging for tablets, ointments, medical products)

  • Cosmetics & chemicals
(e.g. packaging for creams, liquids, powders)

  • Technical applications
(e.g. paper composites for the automotive and electronics industries)

Yes, in addition to rigid packaging, NP® SiOPack® also ideal for Flexible paper packaging how:

  • Bag

  • Wrapping papers

  • Wrapping papers

The SiO₂ layer remains functional even when bent and folded.

For food packaging, NP offers® SiOPack® decisive advantages:

  • Plastic-free barrier against grease, moisture & microorganisms

  • food safe according to BfR XXXVI

  • Compostable and recyclable

  • Ideal for baked goods, take-away and fresh food packaging

The coating thickness is approx. 5-100 nanometres.
Despite the extremely low layer thickness, NP® SiOPack® one Highly effective barrier protection.

NP® SiOPack® is compatible with:

  • coated and uncoated paper

  • Cardboard box

  • Moulded fibre parts

The technology is inline and offline-capable and can be applied using the following methods:

  • Slot die coating

  • Squeegee coating

  • Roller coating

Retrofitting existing production lines is generally not necessary. not required.

NP® SiOPack®:

  • Replaces conventional plastic barriers

  • Reduces the use of materials

  • Reduces CO₂ emissions compared to polymer coatings

  • utilises a water-based, solvent-free technology

The production is based on natural, mineral raw materials (SiO₂).
The coating is:

  • biologically harmless

  • compostable

  • Recyclable in the paper stream

NP® SiOPack® fulfils a. o:

  • BfR XXXVI - Food safety

  • PTS-RH 021:2012 - Recyclability

  • PFAS-free

  • microplastic-free

NP® SiOPack® is compatible with standard coating systems and:

  • Drying at < 120 °C

  • Reduced energy consumption

Yes, the technology is for Production speeds of up to 300 m/min and therefore ideal for large industrial series.

Yes. NP® SiOPack® complies with the applicable Food safety guidelines according to BfR XXXVI and can be used without hesitation for food packaging.
