FAQs about NP® SiOPack® - Frequently asked questions

NP® SiOPack® is a water-based, inorganic SiO₂ thin-film barrier coating technology that provides paper, board and moulded fibre products with a highly effective barrier against moisture, oils, fats and microorganisms.
The coating contains no polymer-based plastics and enables fully recyclable and compostable paper packaging solutions.

In practical terms:
NP® SiOPack® replaces conventional plastic coatings with an ultra-thin, mineral protective layer made of silicon dioxide (SiO₂).

The coating is applied directly to the paper surface using a sol-gel process .
After drying, a transparent SiO₂ layer only a few nanometres thick, is formed, combining:

  • hydrophobic properties (moisture protection)

  • oleophobic properties (grease and oil resistance)

  • mechanical flexibility

- without altering the haptics, printability or appearance of the paper.

Yes. NP® SiOPack® is a sustainable, plastic-free barrier coating offering the following environmental benefits:

  • compostable

  • recyclable within standard paper recycling streams

  • PFAS-free

  • free from microplastics

  • water-based, without solvents or fluoropolymers

This makes NP® SiOPack® fully aligned with today's requirements for sustainable packaging solutions.

NP® SiOPack® is versatile and suitable for, among others:

  • Food packaging
(e.g. bakery bags, window bags, takeaway trays)

  • Pharmaceutical & healthcare packaging
(e.g. packaging for tablets, ointments and medical products)

  • Cosmetics & chemicals
(e.g. packaging for creams, liquids and powders)

  • Technical applications
(e.g. paper composites for the automotive and electronics industries)

Yes, in addition to rigid packaging, NP® SiOPack® is ideal for flexible paper packaging such as:

  • pouches

  • wrapping papers

  • folding and wrapping materials

The SiO₂ layer remains functional even under bending and folding stress.

For food packaging, NP® SiOPack® offers key advantages:

  • plastic-free barrier against grease, moisture and microorganisms

  • food-contact compliant to BfR XXXVI

  • compostable and recyclable

  • ideal for bakery, takeaway and fresh food packaging

The coating thickness is approx. 5-100 nanometres.
Despite the extremely low layer thickness, NP® SiOPack® provides highly effective barrier protection.

NP® SiOPack® is compatible with:

  • coated and uncoated paper

  • board and carton

  • moulded fibre products

The technology is suitable for both inline and offline processing and can be applied using:

  • slot-die coating

  • blade coating

  • roller coating

In most cases, no modification of existing production lines is required.

NP® SiOPack®:

  • replaces conventional plastic barrier layers

  • reduces overall material usage

  • lowers CO₂ emissions compared to polymer coatings

  • utilises a water-based, solvent-free technology

Production is based on natural, mineral raw materials (SiO₂).
The coating is:

  • biologically harmless

  • compostable

  • recyclable within standard paper recycling streams

NP® SiOPack® complies with, among others:

  • BfR XXXVI - food contact compliance

  • PTS-RH 021:2012 - recyclability

  • PFAS-free

  • microplastic-free

NP® SiOPack® is compatible with standard coating systems and supports:

  • drying below 120 °C

  • reduced energy consumption

Yes, the technology is designed for production speeds of up to 300 m/min, making it ideal for industrial-scale manufacturing.

Yes. NP® SiOPack® complies with applicable food safety regulations according to BfR XXXVI and can be safely used for food packaging applications.
